Materials

All the works I have been working on in recent years with the theme of "memory" are made with vinyl paint (Flashe) on cotton canvas.

Vinyl paint is an indispensable material for my current work, and although it is not well known in Japan, it is also known in Europe as a paint that can be used in the restoration of frescoes and as a paint that can be used in the same way as tempera paint in classical techniques. It is It is also used in combination with oil paints and in mixed techniques.

Vinyl paint is a polymer resin-based water-soluble paint that is water-resistant when dry. The particles of the pigment are very fine, and a very good effect can be obtained by a technique such as glassi, in which the paint is applied by dissolving it in a lot of water. The finish has a matte texture and a sense of transparency.

For me, the relationship between the material and the theme is very important, and the tactile compatibility with the material is particularly deeply related to the production process.

I encountered vinyl paint in France and have been using it for over 20 years. By encountering this material, I think I have been able to dig deeper into my current theme.

Over the past few years, I feel that the connection between the themes I want to express and the materials has become closer and more consistent.
